Following the
intervention of the minister of state for labour and employment, James
Ocholi SAN, the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), has extended the
date for the planned industrial action by its members.
The health workers
were expected to embark on a nationwide strike yesterday after the
expiration of an earlier 7-day ultimatum demanding implementation of
past agreements reached with government.
The decision to
extend the dateline for the planned industrial action was reached after a
prolonged meeting which had in attendance: the minister of state,
Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, permanent secretary,
Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. (Mrs) Amina Shamaki, permanent
secretary, service policy and strategy office in the Office of the Head
of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa, chairman,
National Salary Income and Wages Commission, Chief Richard Egbule and
the executive members of JOHESU led by its chairman, Comrade,
Biobelemoye Josiah.
In his remarks, the
minister, James Ocholi appealed to the leadership of JOHESU to give him
30 days to study the antecedents of the issues in demand in order for
the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to be able to
proffer lasting solution to the protracted industrial unrest in the
health sector. After extensive
deliberations and due considerations from both sides, the trade unions
conceded 21 days extension for the commencement of the proposed
industrial action which the minister reportedly accepted.
