Daily pill to prevent HIV may be
offered to thousands of men on the NHS after trials showed it could cut risk of
infection by 60%
A once-a-day drug to prevent infection with HIV could be offered to thousands of men on
the NHS. The pill, called Truvada,
is pre-exposure prophylaxis medication. (PrEP) This prevents new
infections by killing the virus before it has a chance to take hold in the
body.
Giving PrEP alongside regular HIV testing and early
treatment to just a quarter of men at high risk of contracting the virus could
prevent more than 40 per cent of new infections, experts say.
They are now
calling for the 'game-changing' drug to be made available on the NHS NHS England
has confirmed it is carrying out trials of the drug with a decision expected on
it by summer.
Research published in The Lancet HIV suggests that if all
gay men were offered the drug, infection rates would drop by 59 per cent,
preventing 10,000 cases by 2020. However, it also claims that if the drug
was only given to the most 'at risk', it would stop thousands of new infections
every year.
