San-Francisco hospital suspends kidney
donations after donor dies
A prominent u.s medical center has voluntarily
suspended its living donor program for kidney transplant after a living donor
died last month. The donor has provided a kidney to a recipient at the university of California San Francisco center in October. Hospital and regulatory officials are still investigating
the cause of death. Dr Steven katznelso medical director of California
pacific center kidney transplantation
called the donors death a “nightmare scenario. Most kidneys used in transplant
comes from deceased donors but those received from living donors generally have
better outcome” the risk of kidney donors dying
after surgery is about 3 deaths in every 10,000 cases.
